Mission
Honoring and utilizing our rich history and culture, Making Waves Education Program will prepare young people to help revitalize and construct healthy, sustainable communities. Through rigorous academic preparation, Making Waves Education Program will ensure that our youth acquire the skills necessary to gain acceptance to and graduate from four-year colleges and universities. Ultimately, a quality education will enable Wave-Makers to become productive and contributing members of our community.
History
- In 1989 Making Waves is established by John H. Scully, Managing Director of SPO Partners and the late Reverend Eugene Farlough, pastor of Sojournor Truth Presbyterian Church. 46 fifth graders from 2 elementary schools in Richmond are selected to participate in this 8-year tutoring and teaching program.
- In 1994 Glenn W. Holsclaw is appointed Executive Director.
- In 1995 the Second Wave (or class) is admitted to the program and Making Waves expands its range of services to students.
- In 1997 First Wave graduates from high school.
- In 1997 the Third Wave is admitted; from this point forward, a new wave of 50 to 60 students will enter the program each fall in Richmond.
- In 2001 Making Waves Education Program expands its operations to San Francisco.
- In 2003 Richmond’s Second Wave graduates from high school.
- In 2005 Richmond’s Third Wave graduates from high school, San Francisco’s First Wave starts high school.
- In 2006 Richmond ‘s Fourth Wave graduates from high school; San Francisco’s Second Wave starts high school.
- In 2007 Richmond’s Fifth Wave graduates from high school; Richmond’s Eighth Wave enters high school; San Francisco’s Third Wave enters high school.
- Currently, we actively serve more than 650 students from Richmond and San Francisco.
The Program
- Making Waves Education Program is an 8-year tutoring and teaching program that begins in the fifth grade with follow-up support through the college years.
- Tutor-student ratio of 1:5 for regular sessions; 1:1 ratio for support sessions.
- Beyond tutoring and teaching, Making Waves Education Program also provides:

- Financial Aid and Tuition Assistance
- School Placement and College Counseling
- Cultural Excursions and Field Trips
- Mental Health Services
- Program-Related Transportation
- College Housing Assistance
- Healthcare Assistance and Referrals
- Psycho-Educational Testing
- Standardized Test Preparation
- The Middle School Program, grades 5 through 8, focuses on reading, writing, vocabulary, math and study skills.
- The High School Program, grades 9 through 12, focuses on individualized study programs, homework help, SAT and ACT preparation, college and financial aid applications.
- The College Program assists students with the transition to college. The College Leadership Team provides weekly academic and emotional support for all college students.

More than 99% of our students graduate from high school.
95% of our students go on to college.
