The work that we do creates positive disturbances or positive movement in our students’ lives and in our communities. We seek change in our society; the status quo is not acceptable. We seek to be agents of beneficial change for our children and the communities we serve. Most importantly, we strive to instill in our children the awareness that they are gifted and have a responsibility to share their gifts and thereby make a difference in their lives and the lives of others.
Providing the Educational Opportunities that Change Lives
Welcome to Making Waves Academy Upper School!
MWA's high school, launched in 2011, builds on more than two decades of success by the Making Waves Education Program (MWEP) in preparing underserved students from Richmond and San Francisco to gain admission to and graduate from college at unprecedented rates.
The Upper School offers Wave-Makers who have completed Making Waves Academy Middle School the kind of rigorous college-preparatory education typically available to students at elite prep schools.
The Upper School's goals are threefold:
- Prepare students to compete, succeed in and graduate from college. MWA wants its students to graduate with the demonstrated ability, confidence, habits and skills necessary to compete and succeed in four-year colleges and universities and graduate from them.
- Prepare for, expose and link our students to potential career opportunities. MWA seeks to make postsecondary and higher education relevant for Wave-Makers by helping them identify their passions and interests as early as possible and linking those passions and interests to a potential career. This approach recognizes that students may need multiple pathways to success in college and that their studies are relevant to their aspirations.
- Maintaining the astounding level of success of the Education Programs and their college graduation rates. MWA prepares students not just to enter college, but to complete college and aspire to additional graduate and professional degrees.
To ensure college readiness, we offer students and their families comprehensive services and holistic supports to address the challenges they face both in school and outside of school. Though the Upper School and Middle School are separate divisions of MWA, we work hand-in-hand with one another to ensure there is a continuity of service to the students and families of MWA.
