In an attempt to expand its highly touted tutoring and mentoring program, Making Waves plans to start a charter middle school in Richmond.

The nonprofit Making Waves Education Program already serves 550 students from poor Richmond and San Francisco neighborhoods after school, on weekends and during summer.

Students in the program commonly gain entry to private middle and high schools before heading off to college -- with Making Waves often footing the bill for tuition and transportation.
